Summer fun can be fine for you and your dog. Sand, sun, hiking, swimming, drives in the country; all kinds of summer fun can be shared with your dog if you are careful to protect him from danger. Here are some tips to help you share summer with your dog safely:
Ok, so you have a friend who owns a pick-up truck and you want to take your dog for a ride. The bed (back of the truck) is no place to put your dog. Let him ride on a seat with a dog specific harness to protect him in case of an accident.
Its summer and you are ratcheting up the weight loss plan by running every day. If your dog isn’t used to running, take it easy at first, run early before the pavement gets too hot, and make sure you have plenty of water for him. Be sure to check his pads for abrasions after exercising outside. Walking may make better sense for both of you at first.
You and your canine buddy both like to swim? Swimming can be great for you and your dog but be careful. Dog’s ears can trap water and bacteria. Ear infections can be tough to treat if they are not prevented or caught early. Advise your veterinarian that your dog is swimming. Never leave your dog around a swimming pool unless he knows how to get out of the pool. And if the beach suits you better, don’t let your dog drink the ocean water, careful of the waves and remember your dog might need sun protection just like you. Travel water bowls are available at any pet supply store. Be sure to bring plenty of water for both of you.
Do you give yourself a buzz cut for the summer? Maybe fine for you but not so hot for your dog. Your canine friend needs his coat for insulation. A shorter cut is fine for most dogs but not shaved to the skin.
Nice long hikes in the cool hills are great escapes from the baked cement of the city but be careful to check your dog carefully for ticks after you return. Look between his toes, in his ears and in his armpits; favorite spots for ticks. It’s best to protect your pet before you go by using one of the many “spot-on” flea and tick treatments.
